Did you know your medicine could be causing your tinnitus?

If you’ve been suffering from tinnitus for a while, you probably know that there are lots of things that can cause the condition. One of the more surprising causes of tinnitus is medicine. That’s right. Some of the medicines your doctor prescribes for you can actually cause tinnitus.

The connection between medicine and ringing ears was certainly a surprise to me. I learned of it when my nephew developed tinnitus from the cancer medications he was taking. The doctors were able to eliminate the cancer, but part of the price he paid for his cure was long-term, likely permanent hearing damage.

Let me give you a list of the types of medications that can cause tinnitus. According to the Mayo Clinic, here are the types of medications know to sometimes cause or worsen tinnitus:

Antibiotics: Several antibiotics can cause problems, including chloramphenicol, erythromycin, tetracycline, vancomycin and bleomycin

Cancer medications: Some of these powerful drugs that can cause tinnitus include mechlorethamine and vincristine

Diuretics: Bumetanide, ethacrynic acid, and furosemide

Quinine medications and others (such as chloroquine) used to treat malaria

Aspirin: When taken in extremely high doses (12 or more per day)

If you experience ringing in ears and are being treated with one of these medications, you should discuss the situation with your doctors. They may be able to change the way they are treating you and provide you with tinnitus relief at the same time.

What could be a more natural cure for tinnitus than stopping taking a medicine that causes ringing ears as a side effect?

Did you know that the noises in the world around you can have a major impact on your ringing ears? It’s true. Most tinnitus sufferers find that there’s a connection between the amount of noise in the environment and the intensity of their buzzing, popping, ringing ears. But what can you do to reduce excess noise this in our noisy modern world? Here are some suggestions.

Perhaps the best, although not necessarily the easiest thing you can do is ask the people around you to turn down the volume. If you think about it, you’ll probably find that a lot of the noise in your life is under the control of other people. TV’s, radios, music players and the like all have volume controls. Politely asking people to turn down the volume a bit, or at least to give you warning when the noise is going to get loud can make a difference. It allows you to either leave the area, or take other steps to reduce the amount of noise you’re about to be exposed to.

Use ear protection. If you can’t reduce the level of noise outside your head, you can reduce the amount that gets into your ears. Ear plugs can be a safe and inexpensive way to reduce the amount of noise that gets into your ears. You’ll probably need to experiment with different brands and styles to find ear plugs that you’re comfortable with, but the benefits are real and worth the effort.

If you live in an area where there’s construction or other noisy machinery, contact the local authorities and ask them to ensure that the work complies with local noise regulations. Everyone involved may be surprised to discover that the noise level is excessive and they need to take steps to lower the noise level. I once lived across the street from a construction site and was regularly blasted out of a sound sleep by the piercing sound of the equipment’s back-up sirens. In hindsight, it seems likely that the noise level there was excessive, and a phone call to the town might have resulted in my getting a lot more sleep and perhaps less of a tinnitus problem than I have now.

These are just a few of the ways you can protect your ringing ears from excessive outside noise. A well-designed, holistic plan like Tinnitus Miracle will show you many other ways to protect yourself from environmental noise.

Cigarettes and Your Tinnitus

Did you know that the amount of cigarette smoke you encounter in your daily life might be affecting your ringing ears? It’s true.

We don’t have solid scientific studies of the relationship between cigarette smoke and tinnitus. Instead, we have persistent reports from many tinnitus sufferers that seem to show a link between tobacco smoke and ears ringing.

Specifically, many tinnitus sufferers find that their tinnitus gives them more problems when they breathe cigarette smoke, whether from their own cigarettes, or from being around people who are smoking. These same people report some lessening of their symptoms when they are not around smoke.

Unfortunately, that’s about all we know right now. We don’t know if there’s a connection between nicotine and tinnitus, or whether it is something else about the cigarette smoke that causes the problem. We don’t know whether other kinds of smoking (cigar or pipe) have the same effects on people.

We don’t even know if the problem is the smoke, or some form of increased stress from being around someone who is smoking (although that seems unlikely in the case where the tinnitus sufferer is the one doing the smoking).

In short, all we know for sure is that there seems to be some kind of link between cigarettes and increased tinnitus for many people.

Are Cigarettes Contributing to Your Tinnitus?

So now what can you do? You can conduct an experiment. If you are concerned that cigarette smoke (or smoke from some other source) is worsening your tinnitus, the first step is to reduce your exposure. Avoid situations where you are exposed to smoke as much as possible for a few days. During this time, pay attention to the frequency and severity of your tinnitus.

If your tinnitus symptoms seems to improve when you avoid cigarettes, you are probably sensitive to the smoke, and should do everything you can to avoid smoke whenever possible. If you don’t notice any change, you are probably not sensitive so smoke, at least where your tinnitus is concerned.

Some people say alcohol is good for people with tinnitus. Others say it is bad. They’re both right. Keep reading to find out how this is possible.

You may have heard that drinking a little alcohol reduces tinnitus symptoms in some people. You may also have heard that drinking a little alcohol increases tinnitus symptoms in some people. Surprisingly, both those reports are correct. A 1995 study at the Welsh Hearing Institute found that 22% of the participants reported increased tinnitus from drinking alcohol, while 16% reported reduced symptoms. The other 62% reported no effect. What does this tell us?

This tells us firstly that consuming a small amount of alcohol is unlikely to affect your tinnitus. But if it does, the effect could be good or bad. We haven’t seen any definitive studies on the reasons for these effects, but here’s what seems to be happening. For people who benefit from alcohol, it is likely that stress is one of the causes of their tinnitus. Modest alcohol consumption can reduce your level of stress, which would likely reduce the amount of tinnitus.

It is less clear why modest consumption of alcohol would increase tinnitus effects. One possibility is that alcohol does seem to act as a stimulant for some people. Stimulants frequently increase tinnitus symptoms. For heavy drinkers, there’s less of a mystery. The dehydration, headaches, and overall physiological damage caused by heavy drinking are almost guaranteed to worsen tinnitus.

Does Alcohol Improve or Worsen Your Tinnitus?

It is relatively easy to figure out whether alcohol increases or decreases your tinnitus symptoms. But first, let me make this clear: I do not advocate you starting to drink in an attempt to treat your tinnitus! The goal here is simply to help you discover whether your current drinking patterns are contributing to your problem or helping lessen it.

To find out how your current drinking patterns affect your tinnitus, you simply need to take some notes. For the next couple of weeks, pay attention to the level of your tinnitus before and after you drink, and record whether it increases or decreases. Next, if you’re feeling up to it, stop drinking altogether for a couple of weeks and make note of your general level of tinnitus. These two simple experiments should tell you all you need to know about how alcohol affects your tinnitus.

As a tinnitus sufferer, you surely are looking for a permanent end to the buzzing, clicking, banging, ringing ears that characterize this condition. But finding a permanent solution often takes time. What I want to talk about here is two things you can do in the meantime to try to lessen the noises in your head while you seek a more permanent solution. You can put both of these into effect immediately, without consulting your doctor or even telling anyone you’re doing it.

Change Your Environment

For many tinnitus sufferers, environmental noise contributes to the ringing in ears they suffer. Loud noises, whether they come from outside your control (jet airplanes, traffic, construction) or are by your own choice (listening to loud music or blasting the TV) can often make tinnitus worse. Reducing these noises will often help.

Perhaps you can change where you spend your time so you’re not exposed to so much environmental noise. Or maybe you could try listening to quieter music or try listening to relaxing audios of the waves on the beach.

Here are alternatives if you can’t get away from the sources of the noise. You can start wearing earplugs. I find that this is helpful, particularly on airplane flights or wherever there is a lot of environmental noise. Another thing you can try is a white noise generator. These devices create background sounds that drown out the noises from the environment without contributing to the perceived noise level themselves.

Changing What You Consume

Unfortunately, both caffeine and nicotine are known to cause or worsen tinnitus in many people. Cutting back on smoking and drinking coffee (and anything else with caffeine in it) could have a real effect on your ringing ears.

Of course, this is easier said then done. On a recent trip out of the country, I cut my caffeine consumption way, way down. I wasn’t paying attention at the time, but realized after the trip that I didn’t hear any buzzing, banging, or ringing in ears during the trip.

What I do remember is the brutal headache I had the first day of the trip from cutting my caffeine consumption too far too fast. Cutting caffeine is definitely worth trying, but do it over several so you don’t have to suffer the painful withdrawal effects.

I realize that cutting out cigarettes is much tougher than cutting out caffeine. But it may be worth the fight if it eliminates the noises in your head.

Did you know that the foods you eat can have a major effect on your tinnitus? Many people have reported that caffeine makes their ringing ears worse. You will learn about the connection between caffeine and ringing in your ears, as well as ways to reduce your caffeine intake.

Like most tinnitus sufferers, you’ve probably heard that you shouldn’t drink coffee or soda. That’s because they contain caffeine. Caffeine stimulates your nervous system. This has benn shown to increase tinnitus symptoms for many people.

The up and down mood swings that some people encounter with caffeinated drinks can also indirectly cause ear problems. Caffeine is also a vasoconstrictor. That means it constricts blood vessels. And reduced blood flow to your ears can cause or increase tinnitus symptoms.

So it’s clear that avoiding the caffeine from coffee, tea, and soda could help reduce your tinnitus. But these aren’t the only sources of caffeine in your life. Energy drinks often have massive amounts of caffeine, making them off limits too. And there are more sources.

Are you a fan of sweet foods like cake and candy? Well, I’m sorry to tell you this, but both chocolate and cocoa contain caffeine. Sometimes a lot of it. Not as bad as the drinks we’ve already talked about, but still enough to cause problems for some people. This means you shouldn’t simply switch from coffee to hot chocolate in the mornings. And it means you should swear off chocolaty products like candy bars of many cakes. Sorry.

This is only a partial list of the caffeine sounces, some of which you would never expect, that you want to avoid if you’re serious about curing your tinnitus. Fortunately, while there are certain foods you should avoid, there are also a number of foods that can actually help with your problem. The foods you eat can easily become part of a holistic treatment for your tinnitus symptoms.

But those aren’t the only causes of problems. A number of other foods and drinks have been shown to increase (or reduce) some people’s tinnitus problems. The pages of Tinnitus Miracle contain loads of information on which foods you need to avoid. It’s part of the holistic approach to eliminating the noises that plague you.
