Objective Versus Subjective Tinnitus
Aug 20th, 2009 by bill

When trying to figure out what type of tinnitus you suffer from, the most basic breakdown of all is objective versus subjective. Not sure what I mean? Let’s clear that up right now since this is a very important factor in treating your condition.

Objective Tinnitus

While many people with tinnitus are hearing sounds that aren’t actually there, someone with Objective Tinnitus is hearing real sounds. You’re not crazy and you’re not just imagining noises that aren’t there. When you suffer from this form of tinnitus, you’re actually hearing the inner workings of your own body. We don’t normally notice it but our bodies makes noises all the time. It’s just that under normal circumstances, some of the sounds are too faint to reach our ears and we don’t hear the rest, even when they do reach our ears. That’s because our brains are designed to filter out the regular sounds our bodies make.

There’s no advantage to hearing the normal sounds of our bodies (our heartbeat for example) so our brains just filter them out before they reach our conscious mind. Unusual noises like your joints popping or your stomach growling do get through, but the rest don’t.

At least that’s the way things work when they’re working right. If you suffer from objective tinnitus, for some reason your brain has stopped filtering out the normal sounds your body makes. It passes them through to your conscious mind, creating the endless noise that Objective Tinnitus sufferers must endure.

Subjective Tinnitus

People who suffer from Subjective Tinnitus are hearing sounds that no one else can. That doesn’t mean that people suffering from this form of tinnitus are crazy or imagining things or anything like that. It does mean that they’re hearing sounds others can’t detect or explain.

Sometimes this form of tinnitus results from sounds that originate deep within your body and so are undetectable by doctors and the people around you. Other times, the sounds are actually some sort of malfunction, where your nervous system or auditory system are sending your brain the kinds of messages created by sounds, even though that sound isn’t actually present.

So while the bad news is that people suffering from the subjective form of tinnitus definitely have a problem that needs to be resolved, the good news is that they’re not crazy or imagining things.
