Ringing in the Ears – Learning about Tinnitus
Sep 22nd, 2009 by tinny

Tinnitus refers to the irritating ringing in the ears that some people suffer. It can be a single occurrence, one that comes and goes, or a constant irritation. Whatever the case for you, learning more about the condition will help you to understand how it occurs, and how you can remedy and prevent it.

Ear ringing is often caused by listening to loud music. If you recently attended a concert, you may experience tinnitus immediately exiting the venue. This is usually temporary, and will usually disappear within 24-48 hours. However, if you listen to music at a high volume through earphones for prolonged periods of time, it could end up causing ear damage that will cause a permanent case of tinnitus.

Colds and ear infections are two common reason for ear ringing. The noises will usually go away as soon as the illness is successfully combated by the immune system, but it can be annoying to feel ill and hear these ringing and buzzing noises. Medications can be taken to help relieve the noise in your ears so it can be coped with until the illness has gone away.

Although tinnitus is often defined by “ringing in the ears,” many sufferers experience noises other than ringing. These can be buzzing, whistling, or hissing. The volume of the noises can range from just annoyingly audible to an “in your face” nightmare and the pitch can be a low roar to a high squealing pitch. Depending on the cause, the problem may be heard in only one ear, or both ears could suffer the ringing.

Attacking tinnitus usually involves identifying the underlying condition causing the problem. For some people, it can be as easy as clearing earwax build-up to alleviate the ringing in the ears. For others, a change in their medications could reduce the disorder but advice from a qualified doctor should always be sought prior to changing medication in any way.

Sometimes it is not possible to curethe ringing in the ears if it is in regards to permanent ear damage. For these people, they must learn to put up with the condition by learning to tune out the ringing. Hearing aids and masking devices can be employed to assist in reducing the irritation of the ringing heard in the ears and to better your hearing if it is being over shadowed by the tinnitus.

In most cases, tinnitus is merely a transient irritation regarding ringing in the ears. The noises can vary in volume and sound, and are just a symptom of a different issue. It can usually be treated by finding out the cause and treating it. Safe guarding your ears is important to help avoid having to cope with tinnitus in time to come.
