The Consequences Of Tinnitus
Aug 17th, 2010 by tinny

People who report hearing noises that have no apparent corresponding source in the environment are said to be suffering from the disorder we know as tinnitus. Put another way, what the tinnitus sufferer perceives is only a sensation of sound. That sound may appear to come from within their ears or within their head. It is not unheard of for the source point to be somewhere outside the head altogether. The defining point is that the noise can only be heard by the tinnitus sufferer themselves.

Banish Tinnitus

What is less widely talked about is what the effects of tinnitus are.

Any effort to fully describe the impact of tinnitus on a sufferers life is sure to fall short of the mark. With no physical evidence to support the condition it is understandable that there will be those who dismiss it as something imagined or that it is indeed an indication of madness.

The distraction to concentration of even the mildest tinnitus is significant. When the sound level of a tinnitus becomes the predominant focus of a sufferers life it really can feel like insanity beckons. Trying to live with the sounds of tinnitus always there morning, noon and night and with no prospect of relief can be totally unbearable.

A real consequence and effect of tinnitus is that the sufferer yearns for peace and quiet. The sounds of tinnitus cannot be turned on and off. Tinnitus lives by attention and the less noisy the environment the more tinnitus has a chance to come forward and be focused upon. Any tinnitus that gets focused upon grows in volume. The spiraling effect of listening to tinnitus making it louder, and the louder it becomes the more you listen to it, is a spiral that has to be broken.

For many sufferers the effect of tinnitus is to deprive them of rest and sleep. The quiet of the night can be the worst time of all for the tinnitus sufferer. There is no hiding place to escape the effect of tinnitus.

The profound influence of tinnitus can, if left unchecked, impact on not only the sufferer but on their family, friends and colleagues  alike.

It doesn’t have to be like that though. The effects of tinnitus do not have to be accepted as something you have to live with. There are numerous self help measures that can give positive results.

Belief that this can be overcome is the starting point on the road to tinnitus liberation. After the initial distress recedes, the adoption of a positive attitude and a resolve to beat the effects of tinnitus will be the greatest single weapon in your armoury. With this must be a willingness to have an open mind and to try new strategies. For the majority of people the effects of tinnitus can be muted or with a bit of grit and determination they can even be snuffed out altogether.

Life can be very much better for those tinnitus sufferers who refuse to accept the consequences of tinnitus as being permanent. But they do have to be prepared to take up the mantle and do something positive about it such as getting involved with a tinnitus reduction program!
